Just as Aeneas begs for one meeting with his dear father, so does Heaney (Selected Poems 1966 - 1987) , and much of the book records those glimpses. In the title poem he recollects "That afternoon / I saw him face to face, he came to me / With his damp footprints out of the river, / And there was nothing between us there / That might not still be happily ever after."18 Heaney's spiritual excursions, reminiscent of Dante's, to the ghostly past and underworld will remind readers of the difficulties of voyages of the soul: "So draw no attention, steer and concentrate / On the space that flees between like a speeded-up / Meltdown of souls from the straw-flecked ice of hell."84 Although readers may sometimes get lost in the windings of the otherworld so vigorously evoked, most will judge the journey well worth the effort.

What centers the poet's amalgam of personal and literary past, spiritual aspiration, and love of the rough Irish earth is a language mined from the "ore of longing," one that bruises, elevates, and ultimately transcends. Among living poets, Heaney is one of the very few who dares blend his voice with the chorus of Immortals, and one of the fewer still who earns the honor. The men in the photos are shown in the shower, at a beach, on their bunks, etc. It is casual nudity of men living and working together. There are several pictures of naked men at play, such as one man sitting on another's shoulders in a lake. These are men, who were comfortable with one another without homophobia coming into play. It was innocent camaraderie without it being sexual. A lot of men would not like the thought of one guy's bare balls resting on his shoulder. These are average guys in the army caught exposing themselves in real-life situations. Not all of the guys are hunks, but they are all beautiful.

There are more than a few homo-erotic depictions in this coffee table collection of WWI "RnR."Sailors lived in close quarters and were essentially immodest. The frontal-nude photos are an amazing collection of "pre-modest" American Men who were proud owners...and it shows!(The circumcision-laden offspring [Baby Boomer Boys] would not have NEARLY as much casual exposure... while exaggerating their modesty.)

Even though the text is multi-lingual the pictures in this beautifully crafted book speak a universal language. The fun,frivolity and companionship of bare Laid buddies captures an intimate spontaneity of men with men in the most dire circumstances. These photographs are beautiful on many levels remember photos my father had from world war two-like these-they spoke of a dimension only the participants could fully understand.

Great photography book! IF you were to judge a book by the cover, this one would be the winner. Beautiful cover, nice pictures, good historical commentary. Just an all around great book. I collect photography books and this is one of my new top favorites. It is also more reasonable in price than many photography books that are not as good. If you are interested in the male form or history, this is the book for you. The pictures give the viewer a peak of men in a natural, uncensored way, during a time of their sexual awakening and innocence without social labels. It is refreshing to see pictures that are not posed, or touched up like most contemporary photography books (especially gay male erotica). This book has value for its historical, as well as photographic images.

Absolutely incredible book. The photos, the text all transport the viewer to a far distant time and give you an entirely new take on what it was like during the quiet times between fighting. The male bonding, the brotherhood of the soldiers, is beautiful depicted in this priceless collection of photos. It is historic, it is artistic, it is sociological, it is simply so many things wrapped up in one beautifully produced book that will occupy a place of honor on my bookshelf.

Wow, so interesting and great that these were published. Show male bonding in a way that does not exist anymore due to homophobia. This is a time when guys could be guys and were not concerned so much about showing affection or looking gay. Its a nice history of WWII that has not been shown before. Quality book and fun really for anyone.

There is beauty in simplicity and Saints is narratively beautiful in the way it weaves the diverse stories of early saints and binds them together. By doing so, I found my own story being woven in and bound as I read. I felt, as never before, that their stories are mine and mine, theirs. The irony in the dismissive attitudes mentioned above, is that Saints, more than any other previous history of the church, does not shy away from challenging topics. It accomplishes the impossible task of blending milk and meat and making it palatable. As someone in my mid-thirties, I feel my generation has been negatively affected by the well-intentioned approaches of the past. We were often either quarantined from difficult topics, or false traditions and folklore were used to explain them away. Our current Prophets and Apostles are giving us a better way; immunization through transparency. This is what Saints will do for the â€œrising generationâ€. They will know our past (the beautiful and the ugly) and will be empowered by truth and knowing â€œthings as they really areâ€. Saints is engaging, surprising, heart-breaking and inspiring. It is the narrative history that we need right now. It is inclusive in the stories it tells, giving voice to marginalized saints that have had only whispers in the past. This, and the fact that it will be available in fourteen languages on day one, should be a pillar of light to all Latter-day Saints and to the world, that the standard of truth has indeed been erected. The truth that God loves and wants to reach all of His children.

As a recent convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I had researched a lot of the anti-LDS history before joining. Amazingly, the vast majority of what I had learned before was addressed. If I have any complaints, it's how it was formatted for the Kindle; putting so many footnotes at the end of each chapter ruined the flow somewhat. But I highly recommend this book, to member and non-member alike. Note: this book covers only until 1846, when the Saints are beginning to leave Nauvoo.

A perfect historical read for those of us enjoying simple, straight forward, inspiring accounts of faithand fortitude. The true story of imperfect individuals, whose combined efforts miraculously restored the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As a Family Home Evening read aloud, "Saints" easily springboards into teaching and discussing Gospel Principles.

This is an excellent book for learning the truth about the Mormon Church. FWIW - the church now says to call it The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - no matter what you call it, it's a cult. Another exceptionally well-researched book (and important, if you want accurately researched history) is No Man Knows My History, by Fawn Brodie.Something to bear in mind - the Mormon Church has excommunicated people simply because they have exposed the facts. The church's traditional narrative about its history cannot hold up to factual scrutiny.

The value of anything is manifest in its ability to outlast every obstacle and effort to destroy it. And of its people, as Jesus said, "..... by their fruits ye shall know them." Matthew 7:16-20.Despite every effort to wipe them from the face of the earth from beginning to end there still lives a church that is most well known for the degree to which its believers live chaste, grow loving families, believe strongly in their church.Despite all manner of persecution and adversity this book details, what has become a worldwide church is the same no matter where in the world you go.

I liked the way the book goes through the history in chronological order with easy to understand stories and concepts. It was light on philosophy and heavy and explaining the events surrounding the organization of the church. It was also quite an easy read.

This is a perfect narrative history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I've been reading the first few chapters and I can't put it down! If anyone is interested in learning more about the gospel of Jesus Christ, this book is for you!

I love this book. There was so much in here about how God has been working and helping His children to follow Him better.I'd really recommend this for anyone who wants to understand the history of the LDS church.I've been a member of the LDS church for years, yet this book brought additional clarity and understanding to me regarding many historical events, and that knowledge is a treasure to me.
